Lee Grant’s Proud Plastic Past!
While many celebrities still shy away from openly discussing their plastic surgery and other cosmetic enhancements, Lee Grant has nothing to hide. The 87-year-old actress has multiple Academy Award nominations under her belt and is best known for winning an Oscars for her supporting role in Shampoo (1975).
Like many actresses today, Grant had a lot of insecurities from working in an industry with such high pressure. Although she was a precocious child (she debuted a show at the Metropolitan Opera at age 4), Grant nonetheless was obsessed with the perception of youth and even resorted to plastic surgery while still in her 20s. She said she wanted to have the face of “a girl again.” But unlike a lot of present-day entertainers, Grant had a serious reason to worry.
Although Grant had an early start on her career, she also met difficulties early on. During the height of U.S. anti-communism propaganda, Grant’s first husband, Arnold Manoff, was blacklisted for supporting being a member of the Communist Party. When Grant refused to testify against her husband, she was also blacklisted. The ban lasted for 12 years which spanned the actress’ most marketable years (from the age of 24 to 36). Because of this, Grant was highly aware of her own expiration date in the entertainment industry and frequently lied about her age.
Even after Grant was removed from the blacklist and her popularity jumped to new heights, Grant continued to be insecure, afraid that she would soon lose her leading-roles to age. But despite her flaws and fears Grant has always been honest with herself. In her new autobiography, “I Said Yes to Everything,” Grant openly admits her obsession with age and giving into plastic surgery. The frank actress reveals that even in her 20s and 30s she wanted to look 10 years younger. This resulted in a facelift that she believes saved her career. Not only that, but the actress also convinced her mayor to change her birthday on her driver’s license to a younger age. Lying about her age once almost prevented her from attending an Italian film festival.
In her book, Grant goes into more detail on the fragments of her life but what is amazing is how she is willing to bare it all. Despite the commonplace of plastic surgery especially in Hollywood, hardly anyone admits to it, especially those at the top of the star list like Grant. With more and more celebrities opening up about their own surgeries, plastic surgery nowadays is becoming increasingly acceptable and no longer something to be hidden or looked down on.
