Bacterial Buzz: Beauty Through Probiotics

Though seemingly unrelated, the stomach and skin have a lot to do with one another.
Nutritionist Paula Simpson says it’s all about the bigger picture. Looking at the body as a whole, Simpson explains in a Tech Times report that if you are not feeding the stomach nutritional fare, “then you will not absorb and assimilate nutrients” necessary for supple skin.
But it’s not just about absorbing basic A, B and C vitamins anymore; rather it is feeding the body bacteria. Yes, bacteria. A probiotic like L. acidophilus helps the digestive system break down food, the detoxification system is stronger.
With a good gut and antioxidants, the possibility for smooth, healthy skin is endless according to Simpson. “There is a strong correlation between poor gut health and chronic skin conditions. This is known as the gut-brain-axis,” she says.
In that axis “probiotic supplements may help build skin immunity, reduce irritation and decrease the symptoms of chronic conditions such as acne,” adds Simpson, noting “zexanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid antioxidant that (unlike many antioxidants) is effectively digested and absorbed into skin tissue.”
“Because it reaches the skin, it can function as a primary antioxidant to help neutralize and combat stressors that can damage skin at the cellular level," she says. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that “emerging research is finding that the benefits of probiotics may extend beyond the digestive tract to the skin.” Consulting renowned skincare expert Dr. Whitney Bowe, the academy reports that “skin prone to acne or rosacea has shown improvement with daily probiotic use, giving dermatologist’s reason to consider supplementing traditional acne therapy with a dose of this beneficial bacteria.”
Citing both a Korean and Italian study, the academy reports that when consumed, bacteria-fermented dairy beverages reduced participants’ acne lesion count while decreasing oil production.
New York Magazine’s Kathleen Hou reports she has found through the years that good skin comes down to chemicals, but the first way to a healthy epidermis is a matter of skill. “The more time I spend in the beauty industry, the more I believe that clear, good skin is more of an art than science,” writes Hou.
Consulting Gwyneth Paltrow’s holistic physician, Dr. Frank Lipman, Hou reports how the natural healer said “probiotic can benefit the skin by hosting ‘friendly’ bacteria.” Posing questions through the rest of the report, Hou breaks down what a probiotic is. “They manufacture key nutrients and limit the growth of yeast and unhealthy bacteria,” she says, adding that “probiotics help inhibit bouts of lactose intolerance, poor digestion, and diarrhea.”
Ultimately, the bacteria’s benefits are bountiful. “They help protect against stomach ulcers, food poisoning, lactose intolerance, yeast overgrowth, yeast infections, harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They even help improve your skin’s health and appearance,” she says.
