Cosmetic Expert Spills on the Pros and Cons of Laser Hair Removal

If Jayme Bashian knows one thing, it’s hair removal.
The lead medical esthetician and spa director for Simply Posh, a high-end health resort specializing in fuzz-free skin and other cosmetic enhancements, answered Skin Inc. questions on the hairy subject.
But before getting to the inquiry, Skin Inc. threw out some stats and facts on hair removal and the many ways to smooth things out. “More and more people are turning to laser treatments for permanent hair removal. They are all veterans of shaving, waxing, tweezing, and depilatories, none of which prevent regrowth and some of which are painful,” reports Skin Inc., which adds that electrolysis is the ideal removal method, though expensive and time-consuming.
This is why we should be thankful for quicker and cheaper laser treatments, which “is a safe, painless and effective solution for removing unwanted hair on the face, arms, legs, underarms, bikini line and more,” says Skin Inc.
Answering the most basic questions related to the hair removal procedure, Bashian shares her expertise and advice, beginning with how the process works on skin pigment. “The mechanism is based on the principle that light is absorbed by dark objects,” she explains. “Melanin, which gives hair and skin its color, absorbs light from the laser, leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.”
After a low-energy laser is aimed at specific areas, “the heat from the laser is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the bulb of each hair follicle, damaging the follicle and preventing the hair from growing.”
As for the pain level, there is little to none, says Bashian, who has worked alongside surgeons for more than a decade. With a cold gel or a cooling tip at the head of laser device, “the hand-held instrument is pressed to the skin and the laser is activated,” she said, adding the only sensation felt is the “cooling effect from the gel or device.”
Suggesting patients “avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis, as the laser professional is trying to kill the root that gives the follicle nutrients to grow,” Bashian explains that “each time it is pulled out by plucking, the chances of an effective laser hair removal are diminished. It is always best to avoid sun exposure for several weeks before and after treatment.”
With no pain and the procedure only minutes long depending on what body part is treated, the aftermath is also painless as well. “After treatment, there may be minor redness or swelling for a few hours, which can be soothed with a topical cream or lotion,” says Bashian, adding after three weeks, the areas of the body treated will begin losing hair.
And as for it growing back, some may, but much lighter and finer than before, she explains, noting that because of different dormancy cycles, certain follicles may have to be treated a couple of months later. “The number of treatments needed depends on each individual's skin tone and the darkness and density of the hair,” said Bashian.
This expert advice could not come at a better time, with summer still alive for a couple more months and bronzed, hair-free skin the biggest accessory of the season.
