Face the Facts: How Sugar can Ruin Your Skin

A Bitter Sweet Truth
You know the old saying: an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Turns out it might keep the dermatologist away, too! Leading experts are now suggesting that consuming unhealthy sugars from sweets and treats may lead to acne and other skin imperfections. The culprit? A natural process called glycation; the sugar in your bloodstream fuses with proteins to form a harmful new molecule, known as “advanced glycation end products”, or AGEs for short. The more sugar you consume, the more AEGs appear in your bloodstream.
Collagen and elastin, the fibers that keep your skin firm and flexible, are most vulnerable to damage from AEGs. As collagen is the most prevalent protein in the body, this can become a major problem; once damaged, supple and resistant collagen and elastin can become dry and brittle, leading to wrinkles and sagging. These signs of aging start around 35 and increase rapidly after that, according to a study published in the British Journal of Dermatology.
"As AGEs accumulate, they damage adjacent proteins in a domino-like fashion," explains Fredric Brandt, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in Miami and New York City and author of 10 Minutes 10 Years.
Damaging collagen isn’t the only impact a high-sugar diet can have on your body. When you consume high levels of these skin-busting particles, it also affects the type of collagen you have. This is yet another factor that determines how resistant and resilient skin is to wrinkles and signs of aging, says Brandt. The most abundant collagens in the skin are types I, II, and III, with type III being the most stable and durable. Glycation transforms type III collagen into type I, which is more fragile.
"When that happens, the skin looks and feels less supple," says Brandt. The straw to break the camel’s back: AGEs switch off your body's natural antioxidant enzymes, leaving you more vulnerable to sun damage, still the main cause of aging. Simple carbohydrates, like refined sugar, white bread, and soda, cause your insulin levels to spike, which leads to a burst of inflammation throughout the body.
What Sugar You Should Avoid
The long and short of it: simple carbohydrates are your skin’s enemy, as they rapidly break down into glucose and cause insulin spikes.
The following foods are notorious for causing inflammation, as they are high-glycemic or high in saturated fats: white bread, candy, fried food, ice cream, fruit juice, pasta, ketchup, cream cheese, jam, pizza, sugar (white and brown), packaged snacks and sodas.
What Sugar You Should Eat
Instead of sugary snacks, aim for complex carbohydrates like brown rice and veggies. When digested, these foods are broken down into glucose at a much slower rate, which means that insulin levels don’t spike as dramatically. Low-glycemic options, like beans, nuts and whole grains, as well as fibrous foods, which delay sugar absorption, also help control blood sugar levels. Each day, craft a diet of healthy fats (like olive oil and avocados), lean protein (like salmon), fiber (like broccoli and cauliflower) and antioxidants (like berries) if you want glowing, youthful skin.
