Five Top Nutrients for Radiant Skin

You are what you eat, and that’s reflected in your complexion. Certain nutrients are especially important for skin health. While supplements are available, for best results consume a diet rich in these skin enhancers.
Vitamin A – When taken as a supplement, vitamin A requires careful use. It is fat soluble and can build up to toxic levels in the body. Never take more than 10,000 international units of vitamin A daily. Your doctor can recommend the right amount of vitamin A to help clear your skin. Better yet, get a safe daily dose of vitamin A from eating foods such as:
- Sweet potatoes
- Dried apricots
- Tuna fish
Vitamin C – Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a well-known immunity booster and antioxidant. It also helps in wound healing, and can aid acne-prone skin in healing more quickly. Citrus fruits are full of vitamin C. Non-citrus foods rich in this vital nutrient include:
- Bell peppers
Vitamin E – A powerful antioxidant, vitamin E also has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps prevent damage to cell membranes. If acne is an issue, vitamin E can help. Foods rich in vitamin E include:
- Sunflower seeds
- Nuts – especially hazelnuts and almonds
- Dark, leafy vegetables – spinach, Swiss chard and kale are high on the list
- Fish – trout, salmon and swordfish are full of vitamin E
- Olive oil
Omega-3 fatty acids – These unsaturated fatty acids help your skin appear youthful, and they also combat numerous skin conditions, including acne, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Fish oil supplements are a good source of omega-3s, but regular consumption of fish – especially mackerel, sardines and salmon – is the best way to obtain your fatty acids. That’s because fish contain other nutrients, such as vitamin D, important for good skin. Flaxseeds are also high in these essential nutrients.
Zinc- This trace mineral is crucial for glowing skin. It has antioxidant properties, and also aids in skin rejuvenation and healing. It’s especially beneficial for people prone to acne or rosacea, as it is a powerful anti-inflammatory. If you’re eating a balanced diet, you’re probably receiving sufficient daily amounts of zinc. Shellfish can provide you with zinc, as can beans and chicken. Ask your dermatologist about taking a zinc supplement if you’re dealing with a skin inflammation issue.
