Not Just for Carving: The Many Skincare Benefits of Pumpkin

While pumpkin picking for holiday pies or decoration or enjoying the seasonal flavor latte, consider the benefits the big orange fruit has on the skin.
According to Dr. Marnie Nussbaum and nutritionist Lorna Driver Davies there are many unknown advantages. “Pumpkin seed oil (PSO) is rich in vitamin E, zinc, omega 3- and 6- fatty acids as well as antioxidants, therefore it has tremendous benefits for the skin in terms of retaining moisture, fighting free radicals and maintaining a youthful appearance,” said Nussbaum in a Harper’s Bazaar report.
"Pumpkin seed oil is high in the polyunsaturated fatty acid (a longer chain fatty acid) omega 6, which is beneficial for the skin and hormone support in women. I also recommend pumpkin seed oil to men due to the zinc content," said Driver Davies to Latinos Health.Along with skin, hair sees the benefits of the tasty fruit, according to Nussbaum, noting pumpkins both “slow and stop hair growth” and “protect hair follicles and increase shine.” Also known to lower cholesterol and decrease inflammation, the benefits of pumpkins are bountiful, added Nussbaum. Comparing pumpkin oil to coconut, the doctor explained the advantage the fall fruit has over the summer food as far as the hair is concerned. Though both guard and hydrate hair with protein-rich qualities, “pumpkin seeds boost your health abundantly,” she explained. Along with vitamin C, the seasonal squash-like fruit is also rich in A, K, and C according to the Huffington Post, adding the hype of “using the gooey leftovers for homemade beauty recipes” is almost too good to be true. High in “copper, magnesium and potassium—nutrients that hydrate dry skin and stimulate hair growth,” the paper reports how good orange really is.
“Beta-carotene, the antioxidant that gives a pumpkin its vibrant color, converts to vitamin A in the body and provides another layer of protection from sun damage,” adds the Huffington Post. From hair conditioner, body moisturizer, exfoliating scrub and facial mask and peel, pumpkins are perfect, according to Dr. Ted Lain, who shared the how to turn certain food ingredients into a facial mask.
By simply mixing a cup of pumpkin, two tablespoons of brown sugar, one tablespoon of honey and half a cup of yogurt, the doctor explained how spreading a thin layer of the blend on the face for 10 minutes wipes away old skin and moisturizes the new. As the brown sugar and yogurt exfoliate, honey is acts as a “humectant that absorbs water from the hair and naturally moisturizes the skin.”
“This is an added benefit in the fall, when the air is dry and our skin needs extra moisture,” said Lain. So while picking out the perfect pumpkin for your Halloween jack o’lantern or getting ingredients for your traditional Thanksgiving pie, consider the cosmetic uses of pumpkin as well as the decorative and flavorful uses.
