The Skin Cancer Foundation Kicks Off Eighth Annual Tour

Each year, roughly 5 million Americans are treated for skin cancer. Although skin cancer can pose significant health concerns, it can often be easily managed if doctors are able to detect it and begin treatment while the cancer is in the early stages. Given the importance of early diagnosis, the Skin Cancer Foundation is once again going on the road to perform cancer screenings and educate the public about proper skincare techniques.
Founded in 2008, the Skin Cancer Foundation’s annual tour is heading into its eighth year. Since its inception, the foundation says that the tour has logged more than 120,000 miles on the road. In that time, the medical staff has screened over 20,000 patients and detected more than 8,000 cancerous or pre-cancerous cell growths.
During the quick ten-minute screenings offered by the tour, medical professional sees patients inside of a fully customized recreational vehicle. Inside the privacy and comfort of one of the exam rooms aboard the RV, medical professionals give patients a full body examination, during which time they can detect skin cancers at various stages of growth as well as make note of any suspicious moles or discolored patches of skin.
In addition to offering individualized screenings, one of the Skin Cancer Foundation’s other goals is to use the tour as a way to educate the public. While visiting, people can get a firsthand look at a new line of skincare products, available exclusively at Rite Aid, called Receutics Active Skin Repair. This affordable skincare system offers 10 different products to treat a wide array of skin-related issues, such as acne and dry skin.
What Can You Do?
Currently, the Skin Cancer Foundation’s tour is only scheduled to visit Rite Aid locations in New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. But even if you don’t live in those areas, there are still plenty of steps you can take to protect your skin.
First of all, never expose yourself to the sun without proper protection. For everyday purposes, be sure to apply a sunscreen or lotion with an SPF level of at least 30. However, if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, use a sunscreen or lotion that has an SPF of 50 or higher. Also, be sure to check your body regularly, looking for moles that have recently changed shape, color or size, or patches of skin that have become discolored.
Remember, early prevention can be life saving when it comes to skin cancer. So if you’ve noticed any suspicious-looking changes to your skin, be sure and talk with your doctor.
