Summer may be winding down, but there's still plenty of time to enjoy the warm weather and show off your beach body. Unfortunately, if you're one of the tens of millions of Americans that currently suffers from varicose veins, then the prospect of spending a day at the beach might be cause for anxiety rather than celebration. But even though varicose veins are a widespread problem, they're also very misunderstood.
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are veins within the body, typically in the legs, which have become twisted and enlarged. The twisting of the veins causes blood to pool inside of them, which pushes the veins up beneath the surface of the skin, making them visible. Sometimes these veins have a blue hue, but often they just appear to be raised, winding tracts of skin.
What Causes Varicose Veins?
Most often, varicose veins are caused by excess pressure being put on the veins, and they're commonly found in people who spend a lot of time on their feet or in people who are overweight. Conversely, varicose veins can also form due to a sedentary lifestyle and spending too much time sitting or lying down. Also, women are more prone to developing varicose veins, but the number of men suffering from the condition has been steadily on the rise.
What Are the Treatment Options?
When it comes to treatment, there are several easy options. Most varicose veins can be treated with either radiofrequency or laser ablation therapy to seal off the affected veins to stop blood flow. Over time, the veins are reabsorbed into the body and the surface of the skin goes back to normal. In more serious cases, aggressive vein stripping surgery may be necessary, but those cases are rare.
Should You Get Treatment?
The majority of people suffering from varicose veins don't have symptoms, other than the veins visibly protruding from below the surface of the skin. But varicose veins aren't merely a cosmetic issue. They can cause pain, swelling, inflammation, itching and irritation. And in rare cases, varicose veins can even lead to blood clots, which can break away from the affected veins, travel to the lungs and cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
For most people, varicose veins are only an issue when it comes time to show off their legs. But even though they are typically only a cosmetic concern, varicose veins can lead to potentially serious health problems.
