Final Results of the One-Month All-Natural Skincare Challenge

It’s hard to avoid the talk about all-natural products these days - whether it’s food, cleaning products, or skincare products, everyone seems to be touting the benefits of going all-natural to avoid harsh additives or ‘unnatural’ chemicals. But is all-natural really the way to go? Fashionista’s Jihan Forbes recently performed an experiment with herself as the subject: for one month, she swapped out all of her brand-name store-bought skincare products for only those that she made herself from the most natural of ingredients.
Forbes made the change after a less-drastic shift (not using products with certain acids, using only fragrance-free products, wearing sunscreen) had led to improvement in her skin. She went all-natural based on the rationale that natural products would be less harsh on her skin than man-made ones. She stuck to her normal routine - washing her face once or twice daily before applying moisturizer, moisturizing lotion on her body once a day (twice in winter), and using a pore-cleansing treatment or mask at least once a week - but using only natural products. How did she feel about the results of her grand experiment? Well…
Forbes replaced her body moisturizing lotion with shea butter. Initially she had difficulty applying it and didn’t like the smell, but after mashing it up and mixing it with coconut oil and lavender oil, she ended up with an effective, sweet-smelling moisturizer that was also economical.
Her most pleasantly surprising discovery was the replacement for her normal toner. She mixed equal parts tomato juice and honey and applied it to her face. The acid in the tomato juice helped shrink her pores (as she wrote in Fashionista, “it almost seemed like they were non-existent afterward”) while the honey added moisture. She said she enjoyed the tingling sensation that told her it was working, as well as the sweet smell.
Research into natural facial cleansers led Forbes to the Oil Cleansing Method - using natural oils to draw out “bad” oils that clog pores, supposedly resulting in glowing, moisturized skin. She used a mixture of olive and castor oils and initially had excellent results; for two weeks the skin on her face was soft, supple, and glowing, even drawing comments from friends. However, after that her face got dry, dull, and splotchy. After the fact, a dermatologist told Forbes that she didn’t recommend OCM, saying “First, there is a significant risk of allergic contact dermatitis to some natural oils like castor oil. Second, even if the oil applied to the skin helps remove some of the natural oil (sebum) from the skin surface, it is just replacing it with additional oil which, if it isn’t a noncomedogenic oil, could aggravate acne.”
To replace her usual facial masks and pore-cleansing treatments, Forbes made an avocado and honey mixture, which she left on her face for 10 minutes per application, roughly weekly. She was underwhelmed with the results, saying that it left her skin feeling good but that it was nothing special.
Forbes’ takeaway from her experiment was that while some natural skincare treatments are effective, on the whole it is cheaper, easier, and overall more convenient to use storebought products. As she wrote for Fashionista:
“Store-bought skincare is just more fun and convenient, period. There’s a reason why we rush to Sephora or the nearest drugstore to get our hands on new products. They’re easy and not perishable...Also, it is time-consuming to have to mix your own formulas. On most nights, the Oil Cleansing Method seemed like a chore, especially with my busy schedule. It was definitely more of a production than just slapping something from a bottle onto your face...Way too high maintenance.”
