Back Away from the Vodka: Ways to Keep Your Skin in Tip-Top Shape

Between sugar, milk, meat and alcohol, the skin doesn’t have a chance.
A recent MailOnline report reveals how studies show why some food choices fight aging and others contribute to the unwanted process. The fork is the “best weapon” against aging, according to Karen Fischer, skin and nutrition specialist.
Explaining how sugar creates Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), damaging molecules that cause premature aging, Fisher said, “Eating the right foods supplies your skin with the nutrient it needs to produce new collagen, fight AGEs and look healthier and younger.”
Ironically naming rice cakes as a top culprit, the seemingly healthy snack is really refined carbohydrates that when broken down into sugar become AGEs. Attaching onto skin collagen—a supple supplying protein— the “sticky brown compounds stiffen the otherwise elastic fibers in the skin, creating lines, blotches and wrinkles” and “the more sugar a person eats, the more AGE’s develops,” according to MailOnline.
Like sugar, milk has been directly related poor skin according to MailOnline and WebMD.
“Milk contains components related to the hormone testosterone that may stimulate oil glands in the skin, setting the stage for acne,” according to the medical website.
California-based Carmina McGee, RD, and specialist in skin disorders, tells her patients milk does not necessarily do the body good as advertised.
“In my skin-care practice, I’d often take people off all dairy products, which is kind of unheard of for RD’s to do, but it make a huge difference,” said McGee.
Another testosterone fueled food is meat. Making skin flushed and red by the production of higher levels of testosterone that “lead to more skin cells growing,” clogs pores with over abundance of serum, a direct cause of acne.
London-based Ross Perry, top dermatologist of the Harley Street Cosmedics Skin Clinic, said alcohol is no doubt the most damaging to skin.
“The alcohol and the sugar dry out the skin,” said Perry.
A Huffington Post report further calls out alcohol and the damaging effects it has on skin with three top New York dermatologists agreeing while alcohol may feel fun at first, it leaves less enjoyable, lasting effects.
Founder of New York Dermatology group David Colbert said having a drink “may make us feel good, but alcohol is a hepatotoxin.”
Explaining how the toxin specifically damages the liver, inevitably detoxifying and dehydrating skin, Colbert said drinking with caution can help.
“If you have just one shot of vodka or just a shot of tequila that you nurse, you’ll probably look OK the next day,” he said.
So along with daily skin care maintenance—cleansing, exfoliating and washing—and staying away from feel good foods like sugar and meat, or feel good drinks like alcohol, skin has a shot to shine like it should.
