Bright Lights, Bad Skin? Taking Care of Your Skin in the City

While the bright lights in a big city can be spellbinding, there is no reason to be blind to the effects life in a metropolis can have on the skin.
Beverly Hills Dermatologist Dr. Debra Luftman spoke with the Simple Skincare product line about the proper skincare routine for a skyscraper vacation setting.
“I’ve seen first hand the effects that city living can have on women’s skin,” said Luftman, a member of the manufacturer’s advisory board.
Unlike the fresh air and soft water of the countryside, the pollution and hard H2O of the city take a toll on the skin. Along with looming exhaust fumes and smoke that stick to the skin, absorbed by the pores and weakening its barrier, hard water often found in major cities has high levels of minerals and is extremely alkaline.
“Pollution and dirt can impact the effectiveness of your natural skin barrier, ultimately leading to skin irritation. This fact makes twice-daily facial cleansing a key step in removing impurities your skin may have collected throughout the day,” according to the Simple Skincare report. That is why carrying face wipes in the city is key to keeping skin fresh, as well as having your own cleanser in your hotel room to wash with, rather than counting on the complimentary soap.
With much sightseeing to be done, sunscreen is another key product to have in your overnight bag. With SPF 15 readily available in foundations and powders, you can get the necessary sun protection simply by putting on your daily makeup.
Weather can also be a major factor. Simple reports that “cities can go from baking hot to freezing cold to wet and miserable in a matter of minutes” and “changes in temperature, humidity, wind, sun, air conditioning and central heating all play a role in the condition of your skin,” which makes moisturizer another must-have product in the city.
As with makeup, SPF is in so many moisturizers, making it possible to keep your suitcase light by traveling with a 2-in-1 skincare product. While being wide-eyed in awe of the sights, the lack of sleep in the city can cause skin to suffer.
With cell repair and renewal found in a good night’s rest, it is important to get the right amount of rest on vacation since “when you're asleep, your body also produces keratin and collagen – proteins that give your skin firmness and a fresh youthful look,” according to Simple.
Making some room for serum and exfoliator is also ideal when in an urban setting.
“If you’re strapped for time, use an exfoliating cleanser to pull double-duty for skin,” said Luftman.
Lastly, put some vitamin E on your travel checklist. According to a Prevention magazine report, “vitamin E’s potent ability to neutralize damaging free radicals has earned it the moniker ‘the protector.’”
So next time you plan a trip to the metropolis, make sure you remember to pack a few items that will go a long way when seeing the sites.
