You probably spend a lot of time and money caring for your skin. Not only do you invest in a wide array of products – cleansers, moisturizers, and exfoliants just to name a few – but you also have to set aside precious time each day to use them. But what if all of that effort is going to waste?
Odds are you've got some everyday habits that are detrimental to the health of your skin. Check out the list below to see some of the most common damaging practices.
Munching on Snacks
Are you a fan of snacking during the day? If so, then you could be doing serious harm to your skin. Snacks are loaded with sugar, which destroys the collagen in your skin, as well as salt, which dries it out. As an alternative, munch on some fruits or vegetables, and give your skin the vitamins and nutrients it needs to stay looking great.
Okay, admit it. There is something satisfying about popping a pimple, right? Well, even so, that doesn't mean you should do it. Popping zits or scratching at blemishes is a great way to cause scarring that could be permanent. Plus, it irritates the skin and leads to further damage. So when acne flares up, its best to let topical creams and medication do all the work.
Not Drinking Enough Water
Water is perhaps the most essential building block of your body. Unfortunately, when a lot of us are thirsty, we reach for soda or juice instead, neither of which has the same hydrating properties as honest-to-goodness water. Conversely, drinking six to eight glasses of water a day will make sure that your skin is both supple and plump, and it will help to reduce wrinkles and flush away annoying toxins.
By now, you know how harmful smoking can be for your body, but it can be especially damaging to your skin. In fact, smoking tobacco has been linked to both wrinkles and scarring, and people who smoke also tend to experience premature aging and unsightly bagginess under their eyes. Plus, it should go without saying that smoking leads to a higher incidence of skin cancer, in addition to the risk of lung cancer.
When it comes to skin care, it's not just a matter of what activities you should engage in to keep your skin looking great. It's just as important to know what habits you should avoid. And if you indulge in any of the items on this list, then you may want to give them up for the sake of your skin.
