Drinking Coffee Can Actually Help With Rosacea

When you grab your first cup of coffee in the morning, your first thought probably isn't about how it's going to impact your skin. More than likely, you're just trying to get a jolt of energy so that you can start your day. Still, everything that we eat and drink does impact our skin, so it's important to look at how those interactions work.
For all of you skin-conscious people out there, you know that coffee is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to skincare. On the plus side, drinking a cup or two a day can improve circulation and allow your skin to get more of the essential nutrients that it needs. Additionally, it can help reduce acne, eliminate discoloration and even cut down on inflammation and puffiness.
On the downside, however, coffee is a diuretic, so it dries out your skin. On top of that, drinking coffee causes your liver to work harder. With your liver filtering out the toxins from coffee, it may have a harder time removing other toxins, and since your skin is your body's largest organ, it will take the brunt of the damage.
So when all is said and done, there seems to be no clear-cut verdict on the helpfulness of coffee. But a new study shows that your favorite brew may hold a skincare secret, and it could be just the thing you need to fight an incredibly common skin ailment: rosacea.
Coffee and Rosacea
Millions of people around the world suffer from rosacea, and it's especially common in fair-skinned women. The telltale signs of rosacea are a blushing or flushing on the face, typically the cheeks, although it can occur on the nose, forehead, ears and other surfaces. Experts still aren't entirely sure what causes rosacea, although autoimmune function may play a role and it seems to run in families. At present, there is no guaranteed way to cure it either, but that may be about to change.
Recently, a team of researchers surveyed more than 80,000 women over the course of a decade. During that time, they found that women who regularly drank four or more cups of coffee a day were significantly less likely to suffer from rosacea. Meanwhile, they found that caffeine absorption from other foods and beverages, such as tea, didn't play a statistically relevant role, meaning that there seems to be something special about the way coffee interacts with the condition.
Unfortunately, these findings have their limitations. Not only did it rely on the self-reporting of symptoms, but also the participants were all women, so it's unclear if men would experience the same results. Still, this study could be an important first step in finding a way to combat one of the most common skincare problems in the world.
