Eight Foods that are Ruining Your Skin
If you wash your face daily and take your makeup off before bed, you may wonder why your skin is still less than radiant.
Although what you put on your face obviously matters, what you put into your body is also just as important, as your diet also reflects back onto your skin, according to leading nutrition experts.
Read this list of eight foods and drinks to avoid if you’re suffering from daily skin issues or simply desire glowing skin.
It turns out sweets can, in fact, make you break out. According to nutritionists and Naked Calories co-authors Jayson and Mira Calton, chocolate can worsen acne. Chocolate increases the production of interleukin - 1b, a marker of immune system inflammation, which inceases the inflammation due to acne, according to a study conducted in the Netherlands. Chocolate also increases the production of interleukin 10, lowering the body’s immune defense and creating conditions that allow bacteria to infect and worsen pimples.
Bread, sugar and other foods high in carbohydrates
Jayson and Mira Calton saw the effects of their high-carbohydrate diets on their skin when they traveled to Papua New Guinea, where no one experiences acne, likely because its citizens eat low glycemic foods, leaving bread out from their diets. Carbohydrates’ increased insulin levels cause the skin to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne-promoting bacteria and causes inflammation in the skin.
While whole grains are better than white grains, even complex carbohydrates can damage the skin, according to celebrity nutritionist JJ Virgin, author of The Virgin Diet. For gluten-sensitive people, any kind of gluten can create inflammation and an immune response that results in acne and other skin conditions.
Milk contains an insulin growth factor, or IGF-1, similar to insulin and can increase the levels of sebum, an oily substance that clogs pores, according to the Caltons. As little as one cup of milk can increase sebum levels and clog pores. Skim milk specifically causes other skin issues, according to Virgin, since removing fat from milk increases lactose or sugar levels, contributing to rosacea, acne and other skin issues.
Highly reactive, soy can create an immune reaction and inflammation that creates skin issues, according to Virgin.
“I see this often with vegans and vegetarians especially, who over-rely on soy, which eventually becomes a food intolerance,” Virgin explains to Beauty High.
Many of these tiny containers of yogurt have even more sugar than a candy bar, Virgin comments.
“Sugar literally gums up your proteins, creating advanced glycation end products, appropriately called AGE’s that create wrinkling and sagging.”
Nutritionally empty foods, from candy to French fries, can spike blood sugar and lack antioxidants, which fight free radicals for younger, more radiant skin, according to nutrition Mark MacDonald, New York Times best-selling author of Body Confidence. Salt is the biggest culprit behind these empty foods.
“High salt food and even table salt increases bloating and gives you that puffy eye appearance,” MacDonald told Beauty High. “Replace high sodium, processed foods with natural foods -- not in a box, package or can -- as often as possible and skip salt at the table.”
Alcohol dehydrates the skin, making us look older and washed out, according to MacDonald.
“Hydrate your skin with at least two liters of water per day -- preferably working your way up to three to four liters -- for a fresh appearance and limit alcohol as much as possible,” MacDonald suggests to Beauty High.
