Exercise, Peels and SPF: The Holy Trinity for Flawless Skin

Dr. Jeanine Downie has more than a few things to say about skin and you should listen.
Sunscreen, exercise and a periodic peel is what the Montclair, New Jersey dermatologist orders when it comes to suitable skin care, according to the Huffington Post. As a top metropolitan doctor, Downie has been named one of the premier cosmetic physicians in both New York and New Jersey multiple years by NJ Savvy Living. Also featured in a plethora of publications and online beauty communities and licensed in California, Downie delivers her expert advice on both the East and West coast.
Along with applying SPF 30 every, “exercising regularly also helps to secrete important elements into your system, and works to keep your skin looking great, giving it a healthy glow,” said Downie adding “a monthly chemical peel will also help keep your skin in the best shape possible.”
And sunscreen is not just necessary in the summer, according to the doctor.
“Wear at least an SPF 30 every day, rain or shine, January through December—regardless of your ethnicity,” she suggests.
Keeping your hands off yourself, especially when it is hardest to do, is very important in keeping skin smooth and clear. Rather than rub your eyes, wipe gently with suggested Neutrogena or Christian Dior, suggests the doctor, and as for itching an irritating skin condition or insect bites, just don’t.
“Scratching leads to big dark patches and makes your skin heals more slowly,” warns Downie, adding picking at acne is just as injurious to skin.
Yet keeping hands off yourself does not mean not moving them since exercise is an excellent way to get great skin. Working out four days a week in 30-minute increments, “boosts your circulation and improves your muscle tone,” according to Downie, adding an actual skin glow is created from increased circulation from fitness.
In the October issue of Teen Vogue, the adolescent beauty magazine featured Downie, who shared skin care tips to follow when it comes to fitness. From cooling down with cleansers and staying away from sanitizing towels it is important to take extra care of skin when it is warmer than usual. But the most important factor in skin and fitness is contact with equipment.
“Please do not put your exposed skin on the gym equipment,” pleads Dr. Downie in the report.
And when showering after exercise, make sure the metal you slide across skin is sharp and clean, switching out blades regularly. “Never shave any area of your body with a dull razor. This can lead to razor burn and irritation. Change your blade at least every three shaves—more if your hair is thick,” according to Downie.
The doctor also says to drink plenty of H20. Recommending eight glasses of water daily, Downie informs individuals adjust water intake accordingly to weight and size. Drinking more water will also help in drinking less sugar and caffeine filled drinks, which are also bad for the skin. The last suggestion Downie delivers is having chemical peel at least four times a year applied by a board-certified dermatologist. Rumor has it thousands of women who have followed her advice have skin worthy results to prove her suggestions true. So try a few.
