Feeling Blue? It May Be Time for Your Skin to See a Shrink

Even if you’ve never gone to see a therapist, you’re probably still familiar with the general conventions. You walk in, sit down and talk through issues that are causing undue stress or hardship in your life.
But what if therapy wasn’t only a boon to your mental health? What if therapy could also help the health of your skin? Believe it or not, it isn’t as strange as it sounds.
There is a growing field of science called psychodermatology, which is focused on exploring how our mental state affects our skin. Unlike traditional dermatologists, who treat skin conditions with medicine or cosmetic surgery, psychodermatologists treat skin conditions the same way that therapists treat behavior. They look for underlying psychological issues that could be exacerbating skin conditions, or in some cases causing them to occur.
Even though the science is relatively new, doctors have already noted three general categories of psychodermatologic disorders.
People suffering from secondary psychiatric conditions typically experience an emotional response to a physical disfigurement, such as noticeable scars, burns or discoloration of skin pigmentation. Secondary psychiatric conditions also include socially stigmatized diseases, such as genital herpes.
While psychodermatology can’t help with the physical realities of these conditions, it may ease the feelings of shame and low self-esteem that people with these conditions sometimes experience.
Primary psychiatric conditions are closely tied to underlying mental disorders. Someone suffering from this type of condition may become preoccupied with a perceived physical defect. They may cause harm to themselves in response to imagined events, such as bugs crawling on them or worms burrowing under their skin. Or they may engage in stress-reducing self-mutilation activities, such as hair pulling.
While dermatologists may be able to help with the skin damage that results from these behaviors, patients often require traditional psychotherapy as well.
Psychophysiological conditions have an underlying physiological cause but can be exacerbated by stress and anxiety, which makes them ideal for psychodermatological treatment. These conditions include hair loss, eczema, acne, psoriasis, warts, hives and rosacea. Patients with these diseases have found that psychodermatology, self-hypnosis and thought-based healing have helped to lessen and, in some cases, entirely eliminate their conditions.
As with any medical condition, it’s important to have skin issues examined by a doctor before turning to alternative forms of treatment. But if you’re willing to believe in the power of psychodermatology, healthier-looking skin may just be a matter of mind over body.
