Fighting The Wicked Winter Itch

Your skin is your body's first wave of protection from outside forces. When elements like sunlight, cold, heat, and wind attack your walls, don't just retreat with a bunch of big sweaters and ski-masks! Instead, replenish your defenses. Build a stronger front line with these helpful tips to battle the irritating effects of the winter itch.
IN THE SHOWER
Cleansing your skin on a daily basis will help thwart a parched epidermis. Taking a shower everyday is a wonderful idea, but be careful not to clean up too much. Cleaning your face, feet, hands, nooks and crannies everyday without fail is a healthy practice, but paying too much attention to other parts of your body like your arms, legs, and trunk with soap and cleanser is not completely necessary. Extreme over-cleaning can remove helpful oils, lipids, and proactive bacteria that help remove harmful bacteria.
While you are in the shower, it is actually more beneficial to turn the water temperature down and restrict the amount of soap you use. Showering with warm water will open your pores for cleaning. Pores in your skin trap dirt and oil if they are rarely aerated. Following your lukewarm rinse, and just before you get out of the shower, make sure to flip the switch for a few minute’s worth of cold water. Although that arctic chill might be unnerving, don't be worried! The lower temperature will not only close your pores, but will provide a healthy glow by constricting your blood vessels. This will also reduce the appearance of eye-bags, worn skin, and that puffy look you might have early in the morning!
As you're showering it is also important to use the right products and when. A non-irritating, non-detergent based cleanser will suffice. Immediately after your bathing session, apply thick cream or petroleum jelly moisturizer and gently pat dry. Patting your skin dry will allow extra moisture to permeate your skin. Wiping dry will completely absorb all moisture and take your back to where you started.. at the merciless whim of the winter itch!
WIND AND SUN PROTECTION
Even if you are able to perfectly fortify your skin, the winter itch can still find ways to get to your skin. An extra layer of protection is often needed for the roughest of weather conditions. Protecting your exposed face from intense winter gusts will help some much-needed moisture stay intact. And even though the sun might seem like a close and personal friend during the winter months, it will still try to steal moisture from our melanin deficient epidermis. Any type of lip balm with a base will be effective in warding off the sun and wind A lip balm with Petroleum, beeswax, Shea butter, or cocoa butter ingredients will greatly enhance your wind and sun resiliency in the blustery winter months.
You’ve got the shower prep, the wind protection, and the sun protection down; but what happens when you get dry skin indoors? Have you ever been sitting in your office or in an old building and just felt like you were in some kind of ancient mummy’s tomb? A dry room can literally pull moisture out of your skin. Humidifiers emit water vapor or steam to enhance moisture levels in the air. These machines are perfect remedies to cracking elbows, peeling lips, bloody noses, and dry sinuses.
