Can Healthy Blood Flow Prevent Varicose Veins?

According to recent statistics, more then 40 million Americans currently suffer from varicose veins. Not only can this condition be unsightly and embarrassing, but in rare cases varicose veins can also produce life-threatening blood clots. When varicose veins appear, there are effective treatment options to remove them, but what causes varicose veins to occur in the first place and what measures can you take to prevent them?
What Causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are typically caused by weakened valves within the venous system. When valves within the veins are weakened or damaged, blood begins to flow backwards and collect inside the vein. This collection of blood causes the veins to engorge and rise up below the surface of the skin. Most of the time, varicose veins occur in the legs, and the affected veins can take on blue or purple hues, adding to the unsightliness of the condition.
There are a number of risk factors that can contribute to the likelihood of developing varicose veins. Right off the bat, varicose veins are almost twice as likely to occur in women as men. Sorry, ladies. Additionally, sitting for long periods at work or an overall sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of varicose veins. Conversely, standing for long periods can also weaken the blood vessel and damage the valves.
How Can You Prevent Varicose Veins?
Even if your lifestyle habits or family history put you at a high risk of developing varicose veins, there are still a number of practical steps that you can take to help prevent them. Research has shown that healthy blood flow overall can keep the valves within veins functioning properly and avoid varicose veins from forming. So here are some tips to keep the blood within your body flowing at a healthy, normal level.
First of all, you should exercise regularly and engage in physical activity for at least thirty minutes a day. Also, take a look at your diet and make sure that you’re eating foods that are low in salt and high in fiber. Additionally, it’s a good idea to maintain a healthy weight, as this will keep pressure off of your legs and prevent the formation of varicose veins. And finally, you should change your position regularly throughout the day and avoid either sitting or standing for long stretches of time.
Given the number of factors that can cause varicose veins, there may be no way to prevent them entirely. But by taking the necessary steps and cutting down on your risk factors, you can do a lot to decrease the likelihood of varicose veins forming.
