In Good Hands: Maintaining Healthy Hand-Washing Habits at Work
Machinists come into contact with a plethora of common skin irritants every day on the job. The industry tends to require routine exposure to harsh chemicals, mechanical irritants and extreme environmental conditions on a daily basis. Ongoing exposure to these dangerous elements can eventually lead to occupational skin disease.
More than 13 million US workers are potentially exposed to chemicals and other irritants that absorb directly through the skin, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These harsh chemical agents can cause contact dermatisis, system toxicity and a wide range of other occupational skin diseases.
Contact dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin, resulting from exposure to irritants and allergens, which can vary from slight redness and itching to irritating rashes and sores. The skin condition costs employers more than $1.4 billion each year in ongoing medical care, in addition to $500 million in productivity losses, according to a 2005 study by the Lewin Group for The Society for Investigative Dermatology and The Academy of Dermatology Association.
About 75 percent of contact dermatitis cases among workers eventually become chronic, requiring ongoing medical care and negatively affecting workers' overall well being, according to the National Occupational Research Agenda.
What Can Workers Do To Prevent Occupational Skin Disease?
So what should these workers do to reduce the risk of contact dermatitis and other occupational skin diseases? The answer is simple. Washing hands on the job ensures that machinists will have cleaner, healthier and more comfortable hands.
In order to prevent skin disease, machinists should try to reduce their exposure to common skin irritatnts and harsh chemicals, clean and condition tough-soiled hands with the proper skin care products and follow a healthy daily skin washing and skin care regimen.
Specific Things to Avoid
- Avoid wiping your hands on a dirty shop towel, as these towels often contain metal shavings or other harsh debris that could cut or damage the hands.
- Avoid using abrasives or brushes not designed for the skin to clean your hands.
- Avoid placing dirty hands in gloves, as the gloves will trap the contaminants and rub them even more against the hands, causing irritation and often permeation of the skin.
- Avoid eating or drinking with hands before washing them to avoid ingesting dangerous chemicals or other substances.
- Avoid handling harsh chemicals with unprotected hands.
Be Aware of Common Hazards That Can Lead to Occupational Skin Disease
There are four main skin irritants found in the harsh work environments that machinists experience.
Chemical irritants include metalworking fluids, lubricants, oils, greases, solvents, paints, fiberglass, acids and some hand cleansers that include surfactants or detergents.
Mechanical abrasion, another common workplace hazard, can be caused by machining, milling, sanding and grinding. These mechanical actions create metal chips that are rough on the fingertips and hands, causing skin irritation and abrasion.
Physical agents, including repeated or prolonged exposure to the heat, cold, water or friction, can also irritate the skin.
Biological and microbiological agents include any transmission by hand of germs that potentially cause illness.
With all of these skin irritants found in the workplace, it is important to wash your hands, with safe skin cleansers, on a regular basis to clean them of tough soils and other substances and avoid potentially contracting occupational skin diseases.
