Optimizing your Night-time Skincare Routine
A full eight hours keep our brains and bodies fit, happy and focused. A good night’s sleep can even improve our skin, causing us to wake up with a healthy and radiant glow.
Why is that?
While we’re sleeping, our cells actually go into overdrive to help repair the damage caused during the day by contact with environmental pollutants and UV radiation. Our blood vessels dilate during sleep, allowing increased flow of nutrients and oxygen to the skin and helping stimulate the removal of toxic cellular products. Research reveals that cells also regenerate more quickly during sleep.
The good thing is that cells regenerate during sleep whether or not we take care of our skin while we’re awake. However, it’s still important to take the time before bed to feed your skin cells the nutrients they need to optimize healing. For example, you can feed your skin cells antioxidants to fight UV and free-radical damage, hydrate for improved barrier function and fewer flakes, minimize skin pigmentation or regulate oil production for less congestion and fewer zits.
Refinery 29 spoke with Dr. Melanie Palm, dermatologist and assistant clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego, and Jessica Wu, Los Angeles based dermatologist and author of Feed Your Face, to determine how to optimize cellular repair for different skin conditions.
The nighttime plan for dry skin is fairly straightforward. Simply clean the day’s grime, pollutants and leftover sunscreen off your face, then hydrate and lock moisture in.
Any gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin is a good option. Dr. Palm recommends cleansers with ceramides, which help restore the skin barrier. Both Wu and Palm recommend spraying the skin with a microfine mist of plain water after cleansing.
After hydrating, apply a moisturizing cream with hyaluronic acid, which can attract hundreds of times its volume in water, in order to seal moisture into the skin. If you have extra time, apply a moisturizing serum before your cream and try adding a hydrating mask into your nightly routine a couple times per week to help seal in moisture.
“It’s like deep conditioner for your skin,” Wu explained to Refinery 29.
Palm also advises against using anti-aging acids until your skin is hydrated.
“Although these things are wonderful in terms of plumping up collagen and making your skin look glowy, they can really wreak havoc if you already have dry skin and have a compromised skin barrier,” Palm told Refinery 29. “In general, these acids, along with retinols and retinoids, carry side effects for dry and irritated skin that are going to make the situation worse.”
Avoid looking greasy during the day by optimizing your nightly skincare routine to regulate oil production. Focus on cleaning and feeding your skin nutrients that don’t trigger more sebum production. Those with oily skin tend to suffer from larger pores, so the best way to regulate oil production is to keep your skin clean.
Dr. Palm suggests using cleansers with salicylic acid or sulfur and clays, as these cleansers tend to sequester oil and remove makeup and dirt from skin.
“Salicylic acid is what we call a folliculocentric – a concentrate within the hair follicle and the oil gland; it helps regulate and calm down overly oily skin and helps control breakouts as well,” Palm told Refinery 29, adding that anti-inflammatory sulfur- and clay-based cleansers help achieve similar results.
Increased oil production tends to mean increased risk of clogged pores. Palm recommends using a konjac sponge or brushes to clean oily skin, but she warns that these tools can have a counterproductive effect if used more than once per day.
“You can get a paradoxical increase in oil production from stimulating the skin too much,” Palm explained to Refinery 29. Wu suffests exfoliating two or three times per week to clear pores.
Palm comments that retinoids and retinols also help control oil production and the stickiness of skin cells within the hair follicle.
While a moisturizer might not always be necessary for sufferers of oily skin, a non-comedogenic light moisturizer can hydrate the skin without clogging pores when dry patches surface.
Skincare for combination skin depends not on which products you use, but rather how you use them.
Palm suggests using a gentle cleanser, like a glycolic or AHA wash or a foaming cleanser with antioxidants, since they lift oil off the skin while calming inflammation, especially in the face’s dry zones.
She also recommends using a gentle moisturizer, an emollient-based product, with antioxidants like vitamin C to fight free radicals, or resveratrol to help with cell repair. She suggests using these serums and moisturizers to hit dry patches and bypass oily T-zones.
Palm also suggests using a vitamin A derivative for anti-aging benefits. Apply this product to areas that need oil, wrinkle or pore control.
Rather than using scrubs, Palm recommends using a low-percentage AHA or BHA peel, since such products are less likely to cause flare ups, dilate vessels or worsen broken blood vessels.
