5 Simple Tips to Nix the Oily Skin and Stay Hydrated

Men and women of all ages seek out advice from 25-year skin care specialist Renee Rouleau, who practices coast to coast with offices in New York and Los Angeles.
“It’s normal for those with oily skin to want to use a product to rid skin of oil completely, but unfortunately nothing will permanently reduce oil production,” Rouleau said in a Refinery 29 report. “This is your skin, and it does what it wants to.”
Rouleau offered five oily skin care tips, from moisturizing daily to reducing stress, in an interview with Refinery 29.
Cleanse with a Drying Cleanser
Rouleau says that when it comes to cleansers, consumers keep costs down, often buying a product that lacks quality.
“Choosing a good quality cleanser can make or break your routine, so choose wisely,” she advises on her blog.
Keep Skin Hydrated
Rouleau suggests keeping skin topically damp “with well-formulated alcohol-free toners, serums, gel-based masks, and moisturizers.” She explains this step further in her blog post about five ways to reduce oily skin, advising readers to avoid mineral oil, petrolatum and petroleum, which are notorious since they “suffocate the skin and clog the pores.”
As for the third tip, keeping water in the cells is a must, no matter what. There’s no excuse not to cleanse and moisturize, since it is the only way to keep skin subtle and cells quenched.
Don’t Buy Magic Cures
Rather than hoping and praying for scientists to break the code on oily skin, Rouleau proposes do something about it yourself.
“The quickest, simplest and fastest way to create less shine of the skin and combat oil is to blot skin often, with either oil-blotting papers or tissue,” Rouleau recommended to Refinery 29.
De-Stress Your Skin
The last tip is surely the easiest to follow. Relax and your skin will too.
“A stressful life can lead to increased oil production. Since stress causes the adrenal glands into overproduction of cortisol, it then makes the sebaceous glands produce more oil and appear extra greasy,” Rouleau told Refinery 29.
Proving that celebrities themselves are not immune to oily skin, Rouleau periodically profiles Hollywood’s hottest stars, sharing the free skincare advice on her website. She recently featured Susan Sarandon’s daughter, Eva Amurri Martino, an actress most notable for her work on New Girl and The Mindy Project.
Touching on everything from rosacea and redness to wrinkles and large pores, Rouleau offers skincare solutions through updated articles and blog posts. And one thing she makes clear throughout, oily skin is not a condition that has to be suffered by anyone if they simply follow five tips.
