Simple Ways to Keep Your Skin Looking Terrific

Some people are blessed with skin that looks great no matter what they do. It’s sort of the “Winston Churchill” factor of skin health – named for the British prime minister who drank too much, smoked excessively, didn’t exercise, devoured unhealthy food and lived to age 90. Most people aren’t that lucky, and maintaining skin health requires some work. Still, with a few simple lifestyle changes, your skin will look great – maybe until you’re 90.
Avoid Junk Food
You know you should consume a healthy diet, but French fries are so tasty …no one said consuming a healthy diet was easy. It’s not that healthy food isn’t delicious, but junk food is virtually addictive. Break the cycle for your skin’s sake. Too much salt results in puffiness, while sugar affects collagen production, creating more opportunities for forming lines and wrinkles. Foods high on the glycemic index – which includes most fast foods – are more likely to trigger acne than low glycemic meals.
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
The real estate mantra is location, location, location. For healthy skin, it’s hydration, hydration, hydration. You use a moisturizer as a topical hydration source, but bodily hydration is even more crucial. Water helps keep skin plump and resilient, and helps prevent wrinkle formation. Ideally, most people should drink eight 8 ounce glasses of water daily, but that’s a lot of H20. You can also keep yourself hydrated by consuming fruits and veggies with high water content. Avoid soda – it’s bad for your skin and an easy way to put on pounds. Alcohol causes your body to become dehydrated. Carry water with you wherever you go, so you can always enjoy a refreshing drink.
Exercise ‘til You Sweat
Exercise is important for overall health, but sweaty exercise is especially beneficial for skin. That sounds counterintuitive – how can sweat and resulting grime aid skin health? The stuff coming out of your pores from a good workout includes oils that might otherwise become pimples and blackheads. Of course, you must wash you face thoroughly after heavy exercise.
Take Short Showers
Yes, a long, hot shower feels terrific. However, it’s not doing your skin any favors. All that heat actually washes protective oils from your skin and makes it drier. A short, warm, shower – sufficient to get yourself clean – is the better way to treat your skin. Post-shower, use moisturizer to keep your skin supple.
