When It Comes to Skincare, Know the Ingredients

Sunday Riley’s foundation can be seen on the catwalk.
The skincare expert’s luxury product line is often used on top runway models showing off top designer clothes. But you don’t have to be a Calvin Klein beauty to benefit from Riley’s tips on deciphering the majority of hard to pronounce skincare ingredients.
Offering her priceless beauty advice for free in the January edition of Elle magazine, Riley sets the record straight on how to read product ingredient labels.
“Ingredients are listed in descending order, starting with the largest amount in the product (usually water),” said Riley. “If a product touts a particular ingredient but it is listed near the end of the list, then not much of that ingredient is present.”
Knowing the basics is followed strictly by the age-old advice “less is more.” According to Riley, most ingredients only require .05 percent to be useful, so little is added to the product, possibly demoting it to the end of list for numbers sake, but not for potency and protection.
Disguise and marketing are the third and fourth pieces of advice, warning women that when it comes to purchasing skincare products, be clear on the combination of ingredients that promise to keep your skin healthy. Many product lines assert they are preservative free when they’re not.
“That means brands can list the preservative as a ‘fragrance’ in the ingredient listing, making it look like the product is preservative free,” said Riley, noting marketing and word play are key factors in why some products sell or not. “Dermatologist tested doesn’t equal dermatologist endorsed.”
Rather than looking for certain ingredients and percentages, on the contrary consumers must observe when there is no verbiage on a particular product brand.
“An acne-treating product might not say ‘acne’ for regulation purposes, but that doesn’t mean it won’t get the job done,” she said.
WebMD backs tip six, solidifying Riley’s suggestion that it is not all about the SPF number rather than ingredients that provide ideal protection.
“For most people, trying to compare one sunscreen to another can be complicated,” explains Yale School of Medicine Dermatology and Surgery Professor David J. Leffell.
“A few years ago, choosing a good sunscreen meant you just looked for a high sun protection factor (SPF),” according to the medical website, noting further studies prove cancerous UVB rays do not only damage and disease the skin, but UVA rays also increase the risk of cancer while causing premature aging since “they penetrate deeply into skin and cause wrinkles.”
Riley’s final two tips suggest timing is everything when it comes to ingredient interpretation. With oil products all the rage, Riley explains oil’s oxidation will ultimately strip an ingredient of its intended power to protect skin. Riley suggests using “cold-pressed products when possible,” noting they last longer than those that are not processed the same. Finally, checking the expiration date on a product is pertinent to its potency. To make sure you have the right figure of expiration, look for the numbered floating lid jar, according to Riley.
“It refers to how long the product is good for after opening (six months, 12 months, etc),” she said.
There is no doubt certain rules regarding ingredient decoding must be followed in finding the right product; however you do not have to be a rocket scientist to understand what Riley has suggested simply.
