Skincare Tips to Adopt Before You Hit the Hay

The last thing you want to do is reenergize yourself with water on your face when it is time to go to bed.
But a girl can’t always get what she wants when it comes to having healthy skin, with p.m. rinsing a must, according to the experts. And it’s not just about washing with H20 either. There are a few steps involved in a notable nighttime skin regimen.
First, and most obvious, is cleansing. Even WebMD reports on how rinsing off the old to make room for the new is medically a good idea, with Maryland-based dermatologist Lisa Ginn giving good reason why.
“Don’t go to bed until you’ve cleaned your makeup off your face,” reports Ginn. “If you leave it on, your makeup grinds into your skin all night, causing breakouts and even stretching out the pores, which make your skin look older.”
Concurring, New York-based skin expert Dr. Doris Day adds to the tip, suggesting scrubbing with a cleansing brush instead of just fingertips or a washcloth.
“Just don’t overdo it with the cleansing brush. If you notice any changes in your skin, minimize or stop usage immediately,” said Day to the Huffington Post.
For sensitive skin, use hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and even organic cleanser to avoid irritation while cleansing; for oily skin, glycolic or salicylic acid is advised.
After dousing off dirt, applying a facial mask opens up pores for moisturizing agents to penetrate the skin more deeply, according to the doctor.
“Some masks also include aromatherapy, so just putting it on gives a calming feeling,” said Day.
Once you’ve applied an appropriate mask, or cleansed with a brush, smoothing retinoid over the face before moisturizing is key, according to New York-based Dr. Julia Tzu. The famous Manhattan dermatologist informs that store bought retinoid products are also called “retinol” or “retinaldehyde.”
"However, retinoids, especially those that are prescription strength, often dry the skin out. So it should always be followed by a heavy layer of facial moisturizer," said Tzu.
Even if the consistency is not necessarily comfortable, lathering up a thick layer of nighttime cream is one of the last and most important steps of the evening routine, according to the doctor. She specifies searching for night cream that has vitamins C, A, antioxidants and peptides. And right before you close those eyes, treat them gently with eye cream.
“It protects and hydrates the delicate skin around the eye,” said Tzu, noting caffeine and niacinamide respectively reduce swelling and increase moisture levels around the eye.
Some other p.m. points made in nightly skincare maintenance include using a small amount of olive oil or Vaseline around eyelids to gently remove eye makeup.
According to Health Central, some other suggestions for shiny, healthy p.m. skin include exfoliating a few times a week to get deep down dirt and applying a toner to ensure all makeup and left over cleanser is removed. Using silk pillowcases, and switching sides of the pillow daily is also helpful. Sleeping on your back, using a humidifier and of course, getting a good night’s sleep seal the nighttime skin deal. But all that effort is to no avail if you don’t get enough z’s.
“If the body doesn’t rest, the evening skincare products can only go so far,” said Tzu.
