Summer Skin is Dangerous for Skin: Here's How to Protect Yourself

It’s the season for staying outdoors, but too much exposure to summer sun can severely damage your skin. It’s not just the immediate effects, such as sunburn. Down the road, people who spend excess time in the sun without protection end up looking wrinkled and weathered. No marketer has ever touted a “pro-aging” product, but if such an idea existed it would consist of spending lots of time outdoors in the heat of summer.
Avoid the Heat
There are ways to protect your skin from the summer sun, but there’s no substitute for staying indoors or in the shade during the hottest parts of the day. Plan the bulk of your activities for the morning or evening, when the sun is less strong.
Applying sunscreen liberally is crucial for skin protection. In summer, look for a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30, and higher numbers are better. Sunscreens have shield your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, but they aren’t going to protect you 100 percent no matter how high the SPF. You should also wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and light cotton or sun protective clothing.
In the heat, you perspire. Not only does sweat make you feel grimy, but you’re also losing hydration. Drink as much water as possible in the summer. Your skin needs hydration, and this is the time of year it needs it the most. There’s really no substitute for water as far as skin health. Certainly, soda and other beverages high in sugar or artificially sweetened aren’t good for your skin, and alcohol consumption increases dehydration. The standard of eight glasses of water daily seems high, but in the summer your skin will look better for it.
Another good way to stay hydrated is by consuming foods with high water content. That includes the bounty of summer fruits, watermelon, salad greens and many vegetables.
After a day in the sun, your face needs a good rejuvenation. Use treatments featuring antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. These natural substances help repair your skin and reduce the signs of aging.
Use Bronzers or Self-tanners
If you want the tanned look of summer, don’t do it the old-fashioned way by burning your skin in the sun. Use bronzers or self-tanning gels to give you that healthy summer glow without skin damage.
Take care of your skin in the summer while you’re young, and you won’t look old before your time.
