Raw, Real, Toxic-Free Vegan Skincare
Toxin-free beauty website Nourished Life founder and natural skincare expert Irene Falcone recently offered advice in Vogue Australia on going raw and vegan when it comes skincare.
Defining raw, vegan and food-grade skincare
“Raw is a current beauty buzz word,” Falcone told Vogue. “It refers to pure, natural beauty products that have been produced with minimal processing so that the product maintains as many of the original vitamins and nutrients as possible.
“Vegan beauty products contain absolutely no derivatives from animals or living creatures. Even natural and organic products can contain animal derivatives, so if you want to go vegan, look out for ingredients such as beeswax, lanolin (the grease found in sheep’s wool) and carmine (a natural red color taken from crushed cochineal insects). It’s also important to remember that just because a product is natural or organic doesn’t mean it’s 100 percent vegan and many vegan beauty products can also be far from natural.
“Food-grade skincare refers to the philosophy that you shouldn’t put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t eat. This, of course, doesn’t mean you should eat your skincare, but rather that the raw ingredients used in producing the product are derived from edible flora.”
“Switching from mainstream products to all-natural beauty products means you eliminate many ingredients that can clog your pores and irritate your skin (like mineral oil, synthetic colors, fragrances and harsh preservatives),” Falcone told Vogue. “You are literally swapping from a cocktail of chemicals to an arsenal of vitamins and minerals.
“Going vegan, raw and natural with your beauty routine means you’re feeding your skin with all the vitamin-rich goodness nature has to offer. Swapping petrochemicals like mineral oil and petroleum for nutrient-dense nut oils, butters (think Moroccan oil and shea butter) and plant extracts such as aloe vera not only hydrate your skin but also work to repair skin damage.”
Ingredients to avoid in non-vegan and non-raw products
“Parabens,” Falcone told Vogue. “Suspected endocrine disrupters, which means they can interfere with our hormones, no thanks!”
“Synthetic fragrances: Products containing fragrance could mean a chemical concoction of anything including phthalates (another potential hormone disruptor). Side effects can be anything from headaches, dizziness and skin rashes.
“Petroleum/petrolatum: This by-product from the production of petrol can be found in our most common lip products as a moisture barrier agent. However, it’s actually been proven to do the opposite and dry out the lip area.
“Talc: Found in make-up products like powder foundation, eye shadow and blush, this is used to absorb moisture, act as an anti-caking agent and, most commonly, just to bulk up products. Talc has been linked to a number of health problems, such as respiratory issues and lung disease.
“Mineral oil: This slippery derivative of petroleum is used as the base for many body and facial moisturizers. It’s been found to clog pores and slow down our natural cell turn over, leading to dry flaky skin and pre-mature aging.”
Best ingredients to look out for in vegan and raw products
“Organic oils such as sweet almond oil, Moroccan oil, rosehip oil and coconut oil, natural hydrators like shea butter and aloe extract and powerful youth-enhancing antioxidants from fruit such as pomegranate and cherries,” Falcone told Vogue.
First steps to going green
“Because up to 60 percent of what we put on our skin can be absorbed, one of the best natural beauty investments is a raw organic body oil such as a simple jar of certified organic, cold pressed coconut oil,” Falcone told Vogue. “We also tend to ingest our lipsticks and lip balms, so swapping to a raw vegan lip balm will give your lips incredible hydration, protection and a burst of antioxidants.”

“While many mainstream beauty products are made to live on department store shelves for years, raw, vegan and natural products are often made in small batches, with minimal, food-grade preservatives and need to be used within three months of opening,” Falcone told Vogue.
