What is the Best Treatment Option for Varicose Veins?

If you’re living with varicose veins, you know how troublesome they can be. Not only is the condition unsightly, causing sufferers anxiety about baring their legs in public, but it can also cause noticeable pain and swelling. And if those problems aren’t bad enough, varicose veins also come with some legitimate health risks, as they make it easier for your body to form clots, which could break away and lead to a life-threatening embolism.
Given these complications, it’s important to get rid of varicose veins if they develop. But what is the best treatment option for dealing with these troublesome veins? Recently, a team of researchers in the UK released a study examining 800 patients, detailing their results with three common varicose vein treatments.
Vein stripping is a surgical procedure wherein a doctor or surgeon physically removes the veins from the body. While this practice was once a common way to treat varicose veins, it has largely gone out of style in the United States, as less invasive methods are typically just as effective. The biggest plus to vein stripping, however, is that it is the most effective way of eliminating the great saphenous vein, which is a vein the runs the entire length of the leg and can be problematic to treat using other methods.
While the goal of vein stripping is to remove the vein from the body, the goal of ablation is to seal the vein off from the inside. With foam ablation, liquid chemicals are injected into the veins that irritate the interior walls and cause the vein to close off. Even though foam ablation is effective in the short-term, the British researchers discovered that it might present problems down the road. In their study, they noted that patients who underwent foam ablation often saw a recurrence of pain and swelling, necessitating further treatment.
As with foam ablation, laser ablation therapy seals off the vein from the inside. In this therapy, the doctor guides a small wire through the vein which emits a low level of heat. This heat seals off the vein, causing it to collapse. Patients who sought this form of treatment were the least likely to experience complications such as bruising or bleeding and, compared to the foam therapy group, fewer laser ablation patients reported that their varicose vein symptoms had returned.
Ultimately, which treatment works best is going to differ on a case-by-case basis. For example, while foam ablation is typically the cheaper option, the potential downsides may be deterrents. In the end, patients need to talk with their doctors, weigh the pros and cons, and determine the best course of action.
