Yogurt: Good for your Diet, Great for your Face
Everyone knows the multitude of benefits of adding probiotics to your diet, but did you know you could apply them topically?
Gastroenterologist Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa created her own line of probiotic skincare creams. She recently discussed with Yahoo Beauty how the creams work.
What are probiotics?
“Probiotics are beneficial bacteria or yeast – organisms that offer [multiple] benefits to the human body,” Dr. Raj told Yahoo Beauty. “When something disrupts the balance of bacteria, it can result in disease or inflammation and probiotics restore that balance.”
From yogurt to Kefir to supplements, probiotics can reduce gut inflammation, restore your intestinal lining and help with the symptoms of autoimmune diseases and irritable bowel syndrome. Recent studies have found that consuming probiotics can also help reduce skin redness, irritation and inflammation.
“The American Academy of Dermatology has called probiotics one of the new beauty breakthroughs as they’ve been shown to help with clearer skin, decreased sensitivity, redness and inflammation,” Dr. Raj commented to Yahoo Beauty. “You may also see a reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and increased elasticity.”
Can I apply yogurt and other probiotics directly on my face?
You can. Applying probiotics to your face is actually not a new trend.
“In India, for many years, they’ve been doing ceremony day before the wedding where the bride and groom apply yogurt and turmeric to the skin to give a healthy glow,” Dr. Raj explained to Yahoo Beauty. “Yogurt has naturally occurring probiotics. That’s why it’s beneficial when used as a topical mask.”
Search for yogurt products with live and active cultures. Dr. Raj recommends Activia and Goodbelly, a dairy-free product that comes in either yogurt shots or juice. You can find these options at Whole Foods, Safeway and natural food stores, as well as gluten-free varieties. Kimchi, sauerkraut and miso also contain probiotics, but you probably don’t want to apply them to your skin.
Where can I buy probiotic skincare products?
Dr. Raj recently created a skincare product line called Tula, the Sanskrit word for balance. Available on QVC for 25 to 75 dollars, the cleanser, serum, face and eye creams contain probiotics and nutrients that nourish, brighten and smooth the skin while reducing fine lines.
Can I both apply and ingest probiotics?
While it’s too early to tell whether you would see better results by applying or consuming probiotics, Dr. Raj believes that a combination of the two may be the most effective. However, applying and ingesting too much at once is wasteful, since your body will not use all of the probiotics.
“If you’re taking 10 probiotics, many of them are not going to stick around for very long, so it’s probably a waste. But if you have a compromised immune system or are pregnant, make sure you talk to [a] doctor first.”
What kind of probiotics should I use on my skin?
Lactobasili and bifidobacterium both benefit skin health. You will see these probiotics popping up in grocery stores and drugstores more in the future.
Does it matter when I take probiotics?
When you’re consuming products, they will have the same effect whether you’ve eaten a lot or are on an empty stomach. Don’t take antibiotic medications for too long, since these will kill both the good and bad bacteria in your body as well as any probiotics you ingest. Add fiber to your diet to help the good bacteria.
